In Jason Boland's song "False Accuser's Lament," he sings as a farmer whose paid-for testimony sent an innocent man to hang for murder. Laced with fiddle and pedal-steel guitar, the song presents a plot twist to "The Long Black Veil," a ballad originally recorded by Lefty Frizzell. On his sixth studio album, Mr. Boland adheres to country traditions (but largely avoids their lyrical clichés), using his baritone voice to lead the dancehall engine of his band the Stragglers. With members based in Texas and their native Oklahoma, they're a Red Dirt band.

Nashville, TN – Rancho Alto, the new studio album from Jason Boland & The Stragglers, is set for release on October 4th through Boland’s Proud Souls Entertainment (APEX Nashville/Thirty Tigers). Boland is a country purist who believes that true country music is still vital and relevant, if you can find it. He clings onto the notion that the fundamental values of the genre are soulful, blue-collar, defiant, truthful and real. With one foot firmly in the past, and the other in the present, Jason Boland & The Stragglers make country music for people who love real country music.

Jason Boland & The Stragglers formed in Stillwater, OK in 1998, where they began to make a name for themselves. The group became part of the Texas/Red Dirt scene, where their live shows had been selling out as their following grew larger and larger. They released five studio and two live albums and the momentum continued to build, selling over 500,000 albums total, independently. Their 2008 release, Comal County Blue was one of 2008’s most successful independent country releases, debuting at #2 on the Billboard National Heatseekers chart, #30 Billboard Country Albums, #1 iTunes country albums, as well as their first debut on the Billboard Top 200.

Unfortunately, the last decade of Boland’s life plays like a tragic country song. Between a near-fatal car accident, a polyp on his vocal chords, a divorce and a bout with alcoholism, the group’s momentum had consistently been detoured. However, destiny works in strange ways. Boland looks at everything before 2011 as the first half of his career. If he had not gone to hell and back, he would not have had the perspective to make his finest album yet, Rancho Alto.

Jason Boland & The Stragglers are Boland (vocals/guitar), Roger Ray (steel/lead guitar & dobro), Jeremy Watkins (fiddle), Grant Tracy (bass) and Brad Rice (drums). Q: What about those bumper stickers and T-shirts that say “Keep Austin Weird”?
JASON BOLAND: Yeah, I’m all for keeping Austin weird [laughs]. That’s what I enjoy about it. Some of the weirdness is being run out now. It’s still a really fun town. That’s why I can call it home. I’ve been there about two years now. It gets hot, but people aren’t afraid of it at all—I think it’s a source of pride.

Q: Here’s a quote from a 9513.com review of your latest album, the live High In The Rockies : “The perfect antidote for people who have become frustrated by the lack of balance in mainstream country music and a reminder that country does not need pop or rock elements to still kick ass.” What do you think about that?
JB:  I agree, and I’m flattered by it. We definitely appreciate the folks who enjoy the fact that we are a little more traditionalist and have that feel.

Q: The album opens with the song “Hank” which has the lines, “That carbon copy music doesn’t mean a damn to me/Hank Williams wouldn’t make it now in Nashville , Tennessee .” Can you reflect on this?
JB: Yeah, that was a song written by a good musician and friend of ours, Aaron Wynne. I’ve always thought that song was so hard-hitting and honest. If Hank Williams, Sr. went around doing what he did today--or someone else along those same lines—they would get the door slammed in their face. It happens every day.

Q: One of the highlights of High in the Rockies is your interpretation of Tom Russell’s “Gallo Del Cielo.” What inspired you to cover this song in particular?
JB: It doesn’t get any better than this as far as story songs go. It’s a top-notch story song that takes you all the way inside. I always think it’d make a great movie, but then I think, “Nah, nobody would get how sad the ending is.”

Q: If you were to record a duet with an artist in country and someone outside of country, who might that be?
JB: For a male/female duet, it would probably be with Dolly Parton, for my mom. If I could do anything outside of country, it would be with the band Ween. I don’t think I could hang with Mastodon or the Mars Volta, but I dig their music.

Q: How are you traveling? Do you have your own tour bus?
JB: Yes, we travel by tour bus but, I don’t own it!

Q: How do you guys keep sane during travel?
JB: We are such lucky people--we do what we love to do. In our spare time, you’ll find us picking on the guitar and playing on the fiddle, or watching movies and playing video games. I also try to get out and about in the cities we visit. Last time I was in Chicago , I went to the Art Institute, and then I got to go and see a legitimate creation by Banksy, the street artist. That was fun, and then I went to a Cubs game.

Q: Any interesting side trips on the road?
JB: I went to Alaska with Stoney LaRue on his “North to Alaska ” music and fishing trip. I caught a king salmon or two! They ship it home with you, freeze-dried and packed, it was awesome. Sitka , Alaska . Oh it was gorgeous, hanging out in God’s vestibule, it was pretty.

Q: What was the last meal you cooked for yourself? Do you cook on the road at all?
JB: The last meal I cooked for myself was some of the salmon I caught in Alaska . I made ceviche with lime, cilantro, jalapeño and a little lemon. We try to do what we can. We bring a grill on the bus and we’ll try to get out and do some things. A couple of the guys really enjoy cooking. We try, but it’s tough. I’m sure some people make the food and that thing more of a priority, but we’re eight guys on a bus. You eat on the road.

Q: As you’ve been traveling, you’ve been drawing upon material from all parts of your career. Are you guys doing any unreleased material or songs that might be under consideration for the upcoming album?
JB: Sometimes we have put a couple of songs into the set before they’re released, but we mostly play songs that people know. We’ve been at it long enough now and have enough albums to play a full set and still find somebody who didn’t hear some song that they really wanted to hear. We are going back to the studio this fall and I’ve already got plenty of songs that I’m really happy with.

Q: Will the upcoming album also be released on your label Proud Souls Entertainment?
JB: I would imagine that; we do some little partnering kind of ventures here and there, but we never really talk to labels. For us, it has really made more sense to produce our record with people we enjoy working with and then we find ways to get them into the stores.

Q: Describe your best night on tour, ever.
JB:  It’s hard to isolate one show, but it always means a lot to us when we perform at Cain’s Ballroom [in Tulsa ] and it’s packed. You see so many old friends and buddies. The Red Dirt Rangers show up and Randy Crouch is there--it’s Cain’s, you know? Then there’s the enjoyment of finding those special venues that are out of the way like Ziggy’s in Winston-Salem , North Carolina .

Q: What has been your Spinal Tap moment on tour?
JB:  Well, I just had it the other day. We were in New Hope , Pennsylvania and the tour manager came out and he said “ Boston just cancelled.” And I wanted to say, “Oh that’s not a big deal, it’s not a big college town.” I mean, when Boston cancelled on us, that moment of Spinal Tap was in the air--there are what, 20 colleges there?

Q: If you were to have a dinner party with three to four people, dead or living, who would it be?
JB: I would choose Merle Haggard, Andrew Jackson and Moses. I could probably get a decent shot of history. Jesus, you can’t pick. That’s almost too easy.

Q: You covered Gram Parsons’ “A Song For You.” What do feel that Gram delivered that earned him that great position in history in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s?
JB: He brought straight-up honky tonk music to the parties in the hills out there in California and said, “Listen to this. This is great stuff.” He kept country hip. There were a lot of times when pop culture was moving on from it and Merle Haggard--based in California too--wasn’t getting played on the radio anymore.

Q: Looking ahead at the next album, is there anything that you think might be different about it artistically?
JB: I don’t think anything different other then more natural evolution. I like to think I know how to keep people always pleasantly surprised, including myself. You want to keep it fresh—and keep it real for the fans.

Q: Will the new album come out next year?
JB: Yeah, late winter/early spring if I was guessing. I’m also thinking, since we’re a country band, we technically get to make one rock album--all rock bands have their country albums, you know! So, I’m looking forward to that…I think we get to release one rock album where everybody can go, “Wow that is just all rock and roll!” It would be funny.

Q: On that eventual record, what do you think would be the first track?
JB: On a rock and roll record? I probably haven’t written it yet. I would be weary of just going and attacking a bunch of rock classics. Pat Boone did that one time.

High in the Rockies: A Live Album – 2010 (Thirty Tigers)

Like many of his counterparts in the contemporary Red Dirt music scene, Jason Boland developed a strong regional following through a string of quality studio releases and an intense performance schedule that includes more than 200 shows each year. Although it is not a given that regional popularity translates to national success, Boland and his band, The Stragglers, are making their mark outside of their Oklahoma/Texas home base as evidenced by their new live album, a collection that captures performances from four consecutive nights in Colorado and Wyoming.

Recorded live without studio overdubs, this 19-song set showcases the band's symbiotic relationship with its audience - a partnership that allows both parties to feed off of each other's energy. Boland & The Stragglers play a rough and tumble modern blend of traditional and outlaw country - the kind of music that can ignite a theater, a club or even an old fashioned honky tonk. And that's exactly that happens throughout.

Boland and company cruise through a high-octane set focused primarily on songs from the band's two most recent studio albums, 2006's "The Bourbon Legend" and 2008's "Comal County Blue." Some of the collection's standout performances include a spirited take on Bob Childers' Outlaw Band, the Waylon-esque Hank, the introspective Bottle By My Bed and a superlative cover of Merle Haggard's Rainbow Stew.

The band's live rendition of the catchy The Party's Not Over, an instant honky tonk classic and one of Boland's catchier songs, somehow manages to improve on the original studio version and is another highlight.

Taking their traditional-country-meets-Red-Dirt sounds to four venues in the Rocky Mountains – Steamboat Springs, Fort Collins and Denver , Colorado and Laramie , Wyoming – native Oklahoma band Jason Boland and The Stragglers scored major musical points with a dynamite live album, recorded this past January and appropriately titled “High In The Rockies.”

It was released on 4/20. Get it? In fact, a month or so ago, Boland and the boys were busted for pot possession down in Refugio, Texas as their bus blew through that dusty burg.

Tough break. And while they insist it wasn’t a publicity stunt, you have to laugh. That’s show biz, eh?

Anyway, as a long-time Boland fan, I couldn’t be happier with this live collection. And with it being recorded in towns not normally known as attracting Red Dirt music (save for Steamboat, of course), hearing “Backslider Blues” or hearing Boland talking about a “country version of a mosh pit” before kicking off the country waltz tune “Jesus and Ruger.”

Boland, a native of nearby Harrah, is simply an amazing country singer and songwriter. Backed by Roger Ray’s guitar and steel guitar, Noah Jeffries’ fiddle, and a rhythm section featuring drummer Brad Rice and bassist Grant Tracy, the Stragglers run through originals like “Alright,” “ Bottle By My Bed,” and the irresistible “If I Ever Get Back (To Oklahoma).”

But there are some choice country covers like that country ode to Utopia, Merle Haggard’s “Rainbow Stew,” and Don Williams’ “Tulsa Time.” Classy, Boland. Classy.

There’s no “Pearl Snaps” or “Ponies,” but what The Stragglers give us on this outing is bound to give you a bona fide Rocky Mountain high.

Jason Boland & The Stragglers: Road Tested

When you’ve spent as many days out on the road as Jason Boland & The Stragglers have, strange things are bound to happen. It could be a major show-stopping event, such as the a drunk fan stumbling on stage and taking out half the drum kit in the process, or it could just be the random day-to-day weirdness that anyone who lives out of motels will witness.

“It just becomes where our ‘normal’ is a little skewed,” says the Oklahoma-born, Texas-based singer, calling while the band is (where else?)on the road, supporting its new album, High in the Rockies: A Live Album, released April 20 of this year. The songs were recorded over four nights of performances this January in Wyoming and Colorado .

The drum-destroying incident at least became fodder for a song, “Something You Don’t See Every Day,” that appeared on the band’s last studio release, Comal County Blue. “The drummer would up with a broken foot,” Boland sang, “And the roadie, he got a raise.”

The band’s latest adventure occurred shortly before the release of the live album. Perhaps releasing High in the Rockies on 4-20 was inviting trouble, because the band’s bus was pulled over in south Texas , and several of the members were arrested for marijuana possession. True to its road warrior status, however, the band didn’t miss its show later that night.

“The same thing that happened to us happens to everybody,” Boland says. “You get pulled over and hassled and run in. We’re not criminals, we’re a band. Therefore, we’re not really any trouble.”

A picture in time

High in the Rockies is the band’s second live album, having recorded a set at the legendary Billy Bob’s in 2002. With a couple of studio albums out since the last live album, and a new fiddle player in the band, Boland views this recording as a snapshot of where the band is and what it’s been doing. All of the songs on the album, down to the covers (including Don Williams’ “Tulsa Time” and Merle Haggard’s “Rainbow Stew”) are representative of the band’s recent live shows.

The album, like many of the band’s recent concerts, opens with “Hank,” with Boland boldly declaring that Hank Williamscouldn’t make it now in Nashville . Also included in the set are some crowd-pleasers from the most recent albums, including “No Reason Being Late,” “Bourbon Legend” and “The Party’s Not Over.”

Boland & The Stragglers also do their version of Tom Russell’s “Gallo Del Cielo,” which he calls the greatest song ever written about cock-fighting. The first single from the album is “Tulsa Time,” and Boland explains that he’s been on a Don Williams kick for the last couple of years.

“I’m sure I’m not much different from everyone else, where I’ll see a greatest hits CD and think ‘I’m gonna pop that in,’ and it’ll end up staying in the rotation,” Boland says. “Once we started covering it we got a really good response.”

Boland has always liked “Rainbow Stew,” so adding that to the set list was a natural idea.

“When you weigh it all out, pound for pound—longevity, the voice, the songwriting, the guitar picking and overall musicianship—people would always have to listen to your arguments about Merle Haggard being the greatest,” he points out.

Boland and the original Stragglers—guitarist Roger Ray, bassist Grant Tracy and drummer Brad Rice—have played together since September, 1998. Even the “new guy,” fiddler Noah Jeffries, has been with the band for six years. Boland says that cohesion has been a major factor in the band’s success.

“There are certain things we can do that even a lot better musicians can’t, and that’s be us,” he explains. “Everyone’s personality can permeate the tunes we write and play.”

He adds that the longevity has created a mutual respect among the band, and everyone’s musical taste complements instead of clashes. Any differences in ideas for a particular song or musical direction can get road-tested.

“One way to work them out is just to get out on the road and play them over and over, night after night, and they’ll work or they won’t. It’s a constant social experiment,” he says.

Unlike many other Texas bands, Boland & the Stragglers have found success outside of the Lone Star State , selling more than 200,000 records while averaging more than 200 shows a year. Boland adamantly says that he has no interest in getting arecord deal in Nashville ; his albums have been released on his own Proud Souls Entertainment label.

“People are really starved for a more classic country-formatted band that’s not trying to be novelty,” he says. “Most of [country music] today is leaning more toward urban pop music. I think rural America is getting left out.”

Positives and negatives of the road

Having spent more than a decade on the road, Boland’s live on the road has gone through some major upheavals.

“The mode of travel definitely changes,” he says of how life on the road has changed. “You go from everybody in separate vehicles, and then everybody in one big vehicle like a Suburban, and then one more comfortable, sleep-worthy vehicle. Once your attorney can provide it, and it makes sense, a bus.” While he admits it’s hard to justify the expense, having a spot on the bus where he can shut the curtain and get some sleep while traveling helps maintain sanity.

Along with the day-to-day grind of traveling, Boland has also gone through some difficult personal trials, including a career-threatening through surgery right around the time Comal County Blue. He’s also been forthright about his struggles withalcoholism, which also became the basis of one of his best-known songs, “Bottle By My Bed.”

“When times get hard, I know in my life that those have been the things that have deepened me as a person,” Boland says. “It’s funny, because you find yourself saying ‘Now I want to become more in tune with or more enlightened by something’ and you catch yourself wondering ‘Am I asking for this?’”

Just like he’s gone through phases of transportation, Boland adds, “you go through your phases with whatever partying lifestyle anybody gets into. Unless you’re the legends we hear about in the big rock & roll magazines that can do it all their lives, hopefully you get wise. Hopefully, we all gain some form of wisdom.”

Jason Boland Brings Red Dirt to Georgia Clay

Imagine a concert where you don’t hear an electric guitar solo until about an hour into the performance, but fiddles and steel guitars abound in almost every song. Imagine the cover songs are from Gram Parsons, Don Williams and Merle Haggard. Imagine the lead singer is singing about drinking, love and loneliness, all done from the perspective of someone who’s actually lived that life.
Oh, and that the opening song was about how Hank wouldn’t make it in Nashville today.
While it may not sound like it (no costume changes or giant hamster balls?), this was, in fact, a country music concert–one as performed by Jason Boland & The Stragglers. The favorites of the Texas music scene headed east to play for a fairly eclectic crowd at The Peachtree Tavern in Atlanta on Friday night. The sizable crowd of Texas ex-pats, college seniors (and underclassmen with fake IDs) and slightly older country fans were primed and ready for the show, singing along to Boland’s songs, from older tunes like “When I’m Stoned” and “Pearl Snaps” to newer ones from his Comal County Blue album, released last year.
This was a crowd that, despite its relative youth, not only cheered for the Don Williams shout-out but sang along enthusiastically to “Tulsa Time.”
This was my first experience with Boland’s music, and I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. Based on acts like Reckless Kelly and Ryan Bingham, I was under the impression that most of the Red Dirt scene was made up of rough-voiced singers decidedly on the “alt” side of the alt-country line. Boland, though, has a strong, pure voice that couldn’t sing anything else but country even if he tried. The band is rock solid, featuring Noah Jeffries’ on fiddle and Roger Ray on steel, electric and resophonic guitar, and even when they rocked out, it was still country rock and not ’80s hair metal rock.
This concert was a perfect antidote for anyone who’s become frustrated by the lack of balance in mainstream country music, and a reminder that country doesn’t need pop or rock elements to still kick ass.

As JASON BOLAND AND THE STRAGGLERS continue to cement their reputation as one of the country’s finest touring live acts with an expanded 2009 itinerary, the fiercely independent Texas Red Dirt band have announced plans to record a new live album in January, HIGH IN THE ROCKIES. Slated for release in the spring of 2010 (exact date TBA), it will be recorded at four shows in early January in Colorado and Wyoming and marks their first live album since the potent Live At Billy Bob's Texas in 2003. Meanwhile, the band is set to make their NYC debut NYC Saturday, November 7 at Highline Ballroom. Says BOLAND: “We plan on going in there with that attitude that Waylon Jennings had when he went to New York--you know, we play country but hey, we can kick ass.”

What is inspiring the band to record a live album in the Rockies? “Honestly, the first thought is just to do something different,” says BOLAND. “This is an area of the country that’s emerging and it’s become part of the band’s grass roots movement.”

Asked about the song selection, BOLAND says: “I don’t think we’re going to put any brand new material on the album at this point. We’re going to play stuff like ‘Radio’s Been Misbehaving’ (from 2004’s Somewhere In The Middle album). I think we’re going to go back and grab ‘Backslider Blues.’ That one’s off the first record. And then we’ll be doing Don Williams’ ‘Tulsa Time’ (expected to be the first single) and we’ll do a Merle Haggard’s ‘Rainbow Stew.’ We’ll also do the Tom Russell song ‘Gallo Del Cielo’ which is all about Southern California.”

Together for a decade, JASON BOLAND AND THE STRAGGLERS—which features Roger Ray (steel, lead guitar, dobro), Brad Rice (drums), Noah Jeffries (fiddle) and Grant Tracy (bass)—will also shoot a video (a rarity for them) at their January 7 performance at the Steamboat MusicFest in Steamboat Springs, CO.

The concert will be 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at Cain's Ballroom and will feature special guests Stoney LaRue, Mike McClure, Jackson Taylor, Red Dirt Rangers, Brandon Jenkins, Wade Bowen, Cory Morrow and Jarrod Birmingham.

The alt-country musicians will perform classic Don Williams songs, including "Tulsa Time," "If Hollywood Don't Need You," "Lord I Hope This Day Is Good," “Love Is On A Roll," and many more, confirmed Chad Rodgers, Cain's Ballroom general manager.

The show is all ages. Tickets are on sale now at Cain’s Box Office, Reasor’s Grocery Stores, Starship Records, Ida Red, by phone (866) 977-6849, via tulsaworld.com/Cains and tulsaworld.com/ProTix.

Advance tickets start at $15 plus fees, and all proceeds will go to charity, said Rodgers.
